Artist's Statement

My life with clay reminds me of a line from a poem by Pablo Neruda-"I have a crazy, crazy love of things." Creating in clay allows me to indulge in that love of things to an extraordinary degree. I have been working almost exclusively in clay for about twelve years. As with so many artists, I have been captivated by its incredible willingness to transform itself into wonderful forms, and to mimic almost any material. I particularly enjoy the process of construction. Many of my pieces have modular elements, or parts that move. My inspirations come from all around me- events in the world, poems I read, experiences in my life. I experiment with a variety of finishing techniques, from conventional ceramic glazes, to waxes, paints, and patinas of different types. The entire process is endlessly exciting and gratifying.
